Smartcar and Volkswagen Group Info Services AG: powering smarter EV charging across Europe

Joel Cloralt

Director of Product

Our integration of six Volkswagen Group brands is one of the fastest-growing on our platform, with strong momentum from the first weeks after launch. Just weeks after going live across Europe, energy companies are already running real charging programs on these vehicles, and they are just getting started.

Here is what that partnership gives the energy and charging companies that build on Smartcar, and the drivers they serve.

A partnership, not a one-time launch

We work directly with the Volkswagen Group Info Services AG team to keep improving the APIs underneath and the connection experience drivers see. As more energy companies bring Volkswagen Group vehicles onto their platforms through us, Smartcar has become one of the leading ways to connect these vehicles for charging and energy use cases in Europe.

“We are excited to partner with Smartcar to deliver enhanced energy solutions. By combining our original OEM data with Smartcar’s expertise, developers gain the tools to optimize operations and energy use efficiently.” — Lasse Schmidt van Hülst, Volkswagen Group Info Services AG

One integration, six brands, 20+ markets

Companies on Smartcar can connect Volkswagen, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Audi, SEAT, ŠKODA, and CUPRA electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles across more than 20 European markets, through one API and one consent flow. Drivers approve the connection themselves and can revoke it whenever they want.

Built for charging

The integration delivers the data charging programs actually run on: state of charge, range, and detailed charging status, plus the ability to start and stop charging remotely. That is enough to build smart charging, demand response, and rewards programs that move charging to the hours when power is cheapest and cleanest.
